Goodbye 2011
Posted December 26, 2011 by Larry RutledgeCategories: Uncategorized
As the last 5 days of 2011 wind down, I am thankful for many good things accomplished this year.
- Completed a full year as President of the HDL baseball league. Four teams is tough to manage. I feel 3 teams would create a much more stable league and better equalization of team strengths. New options in 2012 will likely keep the number at 4 teams.
- Handled many interesting projects at CBU. I am finding it difficult to maintain my enthusiasm for being tied to a position of responsibility. Still, earning some extra income is hard to ignore and walk away from.
- Projects at home are in good shape. Latest problem, however, has the potential to become a money-sucker (roof issues). I am running out of band aids.
- Much enjoyment from my family.
- Looking forward to going to Disneyworld in 2012 with my grandsons.
The more things change the more things stay the same.

Two years ago I came to a fork in the road and I took it. Now it seems I am back at another fork and this fork took me. Prior to December 31, 2007 I had spent the previous 18 years as a leader in the Package Testing Industry with a few other assorted packaging specialties that I explored along the way. In my position of leadership I could easily bounce ideas and questions off of my subordinates who were they themselves explorers. But the talent that was available to tap into was exceptional. I was almost always able to get input from experts who would feed my appetite for their grey matter. I was a grey matter vampire and didn’t know it.
So today, I am back doing what I left doing at my corporate position. Only now I am trying to give back all that I collected, borrowed or stole when I was immersed in Package Design and Development on a day-to-day basis. As a Package Lab Consultant, I have to decide how I am going to maintain the comfortable retiree perspective I was enjoying before those who have identified me as a potential full-time contributor to their goals and objectives. Being a Packaging Consultant was never my main priority in life, at least the remaining years of my life. I think I prefer the “packaging career” side of me stay as an elective and not something that becomes classified as “work.”
I keep reminding myself that what I am doing is not being financially compensated, so therefore, I can’t classify it as a full-time career. As long as it stays at that level, and I can maintain a realistic perspective as to what it is, then everything should stay manageable. I hope so anyway.
